Diet impacts male and female fertility

Research on the effects of diet on fertility has found some exciting results that can help couples struggling with infertility.  Below are some highlights from the findings of recent research studies regarding how diet affects fertility:

  • Couples eating more salads containing olive oil and men eating more cereals and less meat and processed foods can increase their fertility by up to 40%.
  • Women undergoing assisted reproduction who ate a Mediterranean diet, including high intakes of vegetable oils, fish, pulses and vegetables but low intakes of sugary or salty snacks and processed foods substantially increased the probability of pregnancy.
  • Men involved in IVF demonstrated decreased sperm concentration with increasing weight and alcohol consumption, which could be improved by cereal consumption.
  • Alcohol, smoking, and excess weight reduced sperm motility.
  • Sperm motility was improved by fruits and cereals.
  • Alcohol, red meat and weight-loss diets negatively affected fertilization rates.

These studies suggest that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a well-balanced diet, can positively affect fertility for both men and women.
