Fertility nutrition: the truth about sweets and fats

Eating healthy should be a normal lifestyle practice.  But it becomes especially important when you’re trying to conceive.

A number of vitamins are important to help promote conception and healthy fetal development.  In addition to taking a prenatal vitamin, you can help boost your nutritional intake by monitoring the types of foods you eat.

If sweets are your thing, try to stay away from refined sugars and synthetic sweeteners such as aspartame. Honey or maple syrup are good alternatives to mainstream sweeteners.

Fats have been given a bad rap in pop culture.  However, fats are a necessary nutritional component that are important for maintaining physiological hormone balance.

Foods that contain fats are often good sources of calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, which are very important for fertility and pregnancy.

Healthy fats and oils that should be included in your diet are coconut oil, rapeseed oil, olive oil, peanut oil, and sunflower seed oil.  Use these in place of animal fats and oils such as butter or margarine.

The general message is to cut out a lot of processed and manufactured foods and instead include more natural options in your daily diet.
