A recent study out of Florida State University has found that men alter their speech depending on the fertility of the woman they’re talking with.
The researchers analysed the conversations of 123 male college students from FSU with 5 different women. The women were at different periods in their menstrual cycle.
The study found that the men copied the woman’s sentence structure 62% of the time when the women were least fertile, compared to just 50% of the time at peak fertility.
Interestingly, they found that higher levels of female fertility were associated with lower levels of linguistic matching by the men.
Women do not follow the same trend depending on the man’s fertility.
The authors of the study believe that men alter their speech in order to appear more attractive to women.
