Dealing with breast cancer and fertility

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer face additional issues involving fertility.  Fertility specialist Dr. S. Vyjayanthi discusses some of the considerations breast cancer patients have to deal with:

Fertility.  Depending on a woman’s age and disease status, breast cancer treatment may result in short-term or long-term infertility.  Women interested in conceiving following treatment should meet with a fertility specialist to discuss fertility preservation options.

Contraception.  Women wishing to delay pregnancy following breast cancer treatment should avoid hormonal contraceptives, which could further stimulate cancer growth.

Chemotherapy.  Chemotherapy may irreparably damage a woman’s fertility by indirectly targeting the ovaries.
