Women who have difficulties conceiving due to uterine problems may one day have access to a healthy womb via transplantation – a procedure that’s currently under investigation.
One woman in Turkey has already received a uterus transplant, which has been functional for at least 8 menstrual periods. The ultimate test of functionality though will be a successful pregnancy.
The original investigation into uterus transplantation began over 4 years ago. Unfortunately, researchers were unable to access enough funds to pursue the project.
However, interest in the procedure has been renewed as a result of the successful transplant in Turkey.
Investigators estimate that if the procedure proves to be safe and effective, it may be accessible to patients within the next 2 years.
