Consensus on acupuncture points to treat infertility

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine used for its broad range of positive health effects.  By inserting thin needles into the skin at specific acupuncture points, experts are able to help treat a number of medical conditions.

Acupuncture has even been reported to increase the success rates of IVF.

A research group recently investigated if professional acupuncturists share a consensus on the best points to target when treating infertility.

Fifteen international acupuncturists were surveyed on their practice in treating infertility in parallel with ART.

Researchers found that acupuncture treatment administered between day 6 and 8 of the ART cycle is optimal.   Furthermore, 2 acupuncture treatments are recommended on the day of embryo transfer.

Points SP8, SP10, Liv3, ST29 and CV4 were utilized for pre-transfer treatment.  Important post-transfer points include GV20, K3, SP6, P6 and K3.

The auricular acupuncture points Shenmen and Zigong were also high-priority targets.
