Walgreens is the largest pharmacy chain in the United States with some 8,300 stores in operation.
Now, seven of the stores are offering specialty fertility services.
The Walgreens in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield is the most recent location to be designated a Fertility Center of Excellence.
These ‘centers of excellence’ serve their patients by stocking common fertility medications, staffing an on-site pharmacist trained in fertility medicine, and providing private offices for pharmacists to counsel their patients.
Judy Greve, senior clinical education specialist for Walgreens, views the setup as an extension of the care that’s provided by the patient’s physicians.
The goal of the program is to insure that patients undergoing fertility treatments never experience a gap in treatment, which can mean a costly failed cycle for some.
