Irish women have highest fertility rate

Europe has experienced decreasing fertility rates over the past few decades and currently averages below replacement level at around 1.6 children per woman.

Ireland is reported to have the highest fertility rate in the European Union at 2.1 children per woman.  This rate puts Ireland just within replacement levels.

This high birth rate was recorded for the year 2009.
